EMMET

As I stand there staring at Juniper’s distraught face and Chet’s arm wrapped around her, I feel torn.

I see no other choice but to command my clan to shift into bear form and try to fight back before the forest is knocked down. We don’t stand a chance against all this heavy machinery in human form, but at least in bear form we might be able to slow things down a bit and buy some time so we can come up with another plan.

I’m about to motion for everyone to shift and expose our secret to the humans, but Juniper sees what I am about to do and launches herself in front of one of the very large and very dangerous pieces of equipment.

“Stop! Oh, for goodness’ sake, stop!” Chet hollers at the machine’s operator. He rolls his eyes and walks toward Juniper. “Really? Do you really need to be so dramatic and cause a scene for no reason?”

“It’s not for no reason,” Juniper barks at him as me and my clan stand there, waiting to see what is going to happen. “It’s to save this forest.”

“Juniper, dear,” Chet hisses at her. “You know that I don’t actual care whether you live or die, right? You’re just a pretty little commodity. But I also don’t want any lawsuits on my hands.”

He reaches out to grab Juniper and pull her back over with him to stand out of the way, but in that split second, I see my chance.

I see that Juniper isn’t really with this asshole, that she is still trying to help us.

I lunge at Chet, knocking him off his feet and onto the ground as I pounce on top of him, and we start to fight. Out of the corner of my eye, I can see that Juniper is using this as her chance too. She is using my fight with Chet as a distraction to get away. She runs off into the woods and once she is far from sight, I turn my focus back on Chet.

I am a much stronger fighter than he is, even in my human form, and I manage to bloody him up well enough that he crawls out from under me and yells at his construction crew to cease for the day.

“I’ll be back tomorrow,” Chet screams at me as the blood runs from his nose and drips off the end of his chin. “And I’ll be bringing a slew of lawsuits and a much bigger crew that will force everyone to clear out of this area. If you don’t, you’ll get tossed in jail.”

He yells a few choice words at the crewmembers who did nothing to come and help him, and then gets back into his car to leave, still shouting threats out the window until he has left our territory. His crewmembers leave, deserting the machinery, but I have no doubt that Chet and his workers will be back tomorrow. But for tonight at least, we are safe.

I check to make sure that all my shifters are okay and tell them to stay put until I return.
